About Galera & Cave Homes

Galera is a beautiful village that is located in the northern region of Andalusia. As recently as 1960 there were more than 5,000 people living underground but sadly, recent years have seen many inhabitants move on to the prosperous cities and countless caves have been abandoned. Galera, however, has come up with a plan to revive its population. Spotting a gap in the market for unusual rentals, the town council refurbished a selection of caves and via a stout advertising campaign unleashed colossal demand. This renewed interest led to further caves being developed and put on the open market. A typical re-build consists of renovation to the original cave, which is then fronted with a modern styled villa. This allows all utilities to be connected with all electrics relayed to the back of the original cave. Therefore, you can have all of the luxuries of a modern home combined with the unique experience of being in cave.

Going for a cave holiday in Galera is more than just a hillside experience. The surrounding area is abound with historic ruins and relics dating back to Roman and prehistoric times. Within a short drive you will find wonderfully forested mountains and lakes. In and around Galera you have a number of local walks and bicycle routes (Bikes can be hired in Galera) that are well marked and mapped (information posters in the town square). Galera is a great holiday base for people who enjoy the pleasures of rustic tourism. The road networks are particularly good and the village and cave are easily found from any of the surrounding international airports (Garanda, Alicante, Murcia and Almeria).

The spectacular scenery below shows the beauty of the area with this particular viewpoint only being 30 minutes walk from the front door of the cave.

Galera & Local Markets
Market Days play an important and social role for the village. This a good chance to buy some good local fresh produce which not only costs a fraction of that charged in British supermarkets but also tastes so much better. In addition, this is also a great time to try out some of the Spanish you may have been learning.

Fiesta Patronales del Santo Cristo de la Expiracion (1st Weekend in August). This is the main fiesta in Galera and lasts for five days. With live bands and market stalls, the town centre comes alive from midnight until the early hours of the morning.

Migas Fiesta (26th December) is held in the square. The town council provide firewood and wine and there is a competition between families as to who make the best migas.
