The
main roads in Spain are generally much
quieter than British roads and well sign posted. It would be advisable
to purchase a road map of the region
before arrival.
The
cost of hire cars will obviously vary
depending on requirements, however, a
small four seater costs in the region of
£100 per week (Aug 2007) which is
generally more than adequate. Found the
following website to be quite useful www.novacarhire.com.
Below
are guidelines on how to get to the cave
from the following airports:
Directions
on arrival in Galera
The following instructions will take
you from the centre of Galera (La Posa
Pizzaria) to the cave.
La Posa
Pizzaria – Cave Palamar (Approx 800
meters – all uphill)
On passing La Posa, follow the road
uphill. After about 300 meters on the
right hand side you should see two
recycling containers. This is a mini
crossroad section; signs for Cuevas
should also be seen at this point. Take
the slip road on the right that takes
between the recycling containers and the
house on the corner. From this point you
stay on the road and basically keeping
going uphill for about 300 meters, until
you reach the brow of
the hill. If you start to go down hill
you have missed the turning. At the top
of the hill you need to virtually turn
back on yourself and executing a mini three point turn. Once you
have turned around, the road will bear to
the left, you will be facing a complex
of four cave homes (All recently
renovated with flat concrete area in
front). Cave Palomar is the be last Cave
(park and enjoy).
Directions
from Alicante Airport to Galera (2.5
hours)
From the airport access road follow the
signs to Murcia, This will take you onto
the A7/E15 motorway.
The key is to keep following the signs
to Murcia.
When approaching Murcia make sure to
follow directions for Granada. This
will now be the key direction to follow.
You will pass the turnings for Lorca and
Velez Rubio.
Eventually you will see signs for the
A330, Cullar, Huescar (after the Venta
del Peral turnoff). Head towards Cullar
then follow signs on A330 towards Galera.
Follow
this road for 20km and take the second
turning for Galera (after you have come
down a long hill). If you pass under a
road bridge and a service station
(Shell) to your right you have gone too
far.
After about 300m you will see a left
turn into the village (next to the Cruce
Bar, followed by driving over the bridge
and almost dried up river), take this
road, passing Manilos (Bar & restaurant
on the left) and follow it as it swings
(sharply) around to your left - you will
see La Posa Pizzaria on your right (See
Above).
Directions
from Granada Airport to Galera (1.5
hours)
From the airport access road follow the
signs to Granada, Santa Fe.
Shortly after this signs for Guadix and
Murcia should appear, this will take you
onto the A-92 (following signs to Murcia
is the key).
The A-92 joins up with the A-92N heading
towards Baza and Murcia.
Passing Baza follow the A92N towards
Murcia for about 20k when you will see
signs for the A330, Cullar, Huescar (after
the Venta del Peral turnoff). Head
towards Cullar then follow signs on A330
towards Galera.

Directions from the Murcia, San Javier
Airport to Galera (2 Hours)
Total journey time is around 2 hours
(taking it steady)
The
first point to mention is that the
airport in Murcia is not in Murcia, San
Javier Airport is on the coast
approximately 40km away. Below is a
suggested route alternatives can be used.
From
the Airport take the A37 in the
direction of Cartagena, The A37 is the
motorway and after a relatively short
distance changes into the N332.
When
approaching Cartagena take the N301 in
the direction of Murcia.
When
approaching Murcia follow directions for
Granada / Lorca. This should take you on
to the ring road and eventually onto the
E15.
Once on
the E15 keep following the signs to
Granada, this will take you onto the
A91.
Eventually you will see signs for the
A330, Cullar, Huescar (after the Venta
del Peral turnoff). Head towards Cullar
then follow signs on A330 towards
Galera.
